Kaleidoscope Family Theatre Festival June 9,10 and 16. Preview.

The Family Theatre Festival: 3 Days of Great Performances, 2 New Locations, and a World Premiere!

Kaleidoscope Theatre for Young People is proud to announce our upcoming Family Theatre Festival, taking place on June 9th and 10th at the Belfry Theatre, and June 16th in Langford.

For our sixth year, Kaleidoscope is delighted to be expanding our festival, reaching out to new communities and areas. In Victoria, we have partnered with the Belfry Theatre to bring four productions to life over the weekend of June 9th and 10th, running from 11 AM to 5 PM. Kaleidoscope will be premiering “When the Sun Crosses the Line”. Touching, loving and historical, this new work by Kaleidoscope Theatre’s artistic director, Roderick Glanville, does not shy away from some tough questions.

“I feel its important for us to understand the complex issues of what reconciliation really means to those that may be afraid to ask,” Roderick explains. “Knowing our history changes our future. In our play, June, a thirteen year old girl, asks those though questions that are often the ‘Elephant in the Room’.”

Kaleidoscope will also be joined by four of our wonderful partners: Story Theatre, with their production of “Off the Shelf”, Star Star Theatre, with their production of “Raccoonaissance”, and Bonnie Duncan, with her work, “Squirrel Stole My Underpants!” There will be activities in Fernwood Square, food trucks, and free performances by Cam & Daisy.

On June 16th, thanks to the support of presenting sponsor the West Shore Arts Council, Kaleidoscope will be bringing the Family Theatre Festival to the West Shore for the first time at! This one-day extension to the festival will be taking place at the Belmont Secondary School Theatre, running from 11 AM to 3:30 PM. We will be joined by Story Theatre and long-time Kaleidoscope partner Paul Kilshaw, as well as our old friends Cam & Daisy.

Tickets for each show at the Family Theatre Festival are $15 for adults, and $10 for children. Tickets to our Belfry productions can be purchased through the Belfry Theatre’s ticket site, and tickets to the West Shore productions can be purchased through the Kaleidoscope website.

11:00 AM: Star Star Theatre “Raccoonaissance”

Fusing clown and puppetry, Raccoonnaissance tells the story of a girl who, raised by raccoons, now lives her life as one. Sometimes silly, oftentimes perilous, Raccoonaissance is a solo physical theatre piece for all ages. As the girl uncovers more about her own mystery, the show navigates themes of identity, self-realization, and shines a light on the masks we wear.

1:00 PM Bonnie Duncan in “Squirrel Stole My Underpants”

As Sylvie hangs laundry in the backyard, a mischievous squirrel runs off with her favorite piece of clothing! When she gives chase, an entire world emerges from her laundry basket. Featuring live music!

2:30 PM Kaleidoscope “When the Sun Crosses the Line”

“When the Sun Crosses the Line”: Twelve-year-old June is working on a school project.   Her research materials are strewn around her bedroom that looks like a hurricane has blown through! She has chosen two subjects: the Beothuk People of Newfoundland, and The Great Auk, a flightless sea bird.  What they share in common is that they no longer exist.  June takes us on a journey linking our past to the present as she asks questions about Indigenous People, species extinction, and what does reconciliation really mean?   She forms a fun-loving, imaginary friendship with a Beothuk woman called Demasduit, interviews a Viking and survives an ocean voyage in a storm! June asks questions about our history and the impact we have had on First Nations People.  She is not afraid to talk about ‘the Elephant in the Room’.  Touching, loving and historical, this new work by Kaleidoscope Theatre’s artistic director, Roderick Glanville, is for all ages, and does not shy away from the many tough questions we are asking as we journey toward healing and understanding of what reconciliation really means.

4:00 PM Story Theatre “Off the Shelf”

“Off the Shelf”: Some stories stick with you for a long time, some stories go by so fast, some are good for bedtime and some stories Jump Off the Shelf!  Story Theatre brings you an exciting collection of our favourite stories, live and Off the Shelf.  A troll guards his bridge, a circus comes to town and who keeps stealing the lion cubs food; these stories and more come to the stage with the show Off the Shelf.  Story Theatre offers an antidote to technology with… live theatre – handcrafted with care.
