Faces of Love, Portraits from Our Place by Elfrida Schragen

Faces of Love – Portraits from Our Place by Elfrida Schragen. When artist Elfrida Schragen was approached about a month-long artist-in-residency program at a local resort, she immediately knew what – and who – she wanted to paint. In 2007, Schragen painted a series of portraits featuring people from all walks of life who used the services of Our Place, an inner-city community centre for the most vulnerable of Greater Victoria. FREE Community Recycling Events on Vancouver Island April May 2014

FREE Community Recycling Events on Vancouver Island April May 2014. I'm a long-time supporter of recycling (and composting) and was an original dumpster-diver at the University of Victoria when the first paper recycling program was being established over 40 years ago.  I've written about my soft plastic recycling efforts--Beyond the Blue Box, Take Recycling to the Next Level.  Island Return-It depots have organized FREE community Recycling … [Read more...]

From the Heart: enter into the journey of reconciliation. July 10 – 27th 2013.

I grew up in Ucluelet on the traditional lands of the Nuu-chah-nulth people, but it wasn’t until I was in Grade 5 or 6 that the first aboriginal students joined us at the local elementary school. Our settler’s memory can be very selective, even … [Read more...]

4th Annual Fashion with Passion Fundraiser for WIN Cooperative

One of my favourite destinations is the WIN store on Cook Street.  I like to give back to my community by supporting this locally owned cooperative that assists so many "women in need". … [Read more...]

I've been a supporter of Quadra Village Day since moving to the Hillside - Quadra neighbourhood in 2006, and a member of the entirely volunteer-run planning committee since 2008.  This year one of our community partners and long time supporters, Dance Victoria, is organizing a "flash-mob" style dance to be performed at Quadra Village Day on Saturday May 12th. In 2011 Dance Victoria received municipal funding to create an … [Read more...]

Building Resilient Networks, Online and Off, talk from IdeaWave 2011

From a talk given at Idea Wave 2011: Building Resilient Networks, Online and Off, in the 21st Century.  Thanks to Kris Constable for continuing to provide a platform for critical thinkers to exchange ideas. Today I got to thinking about social media, connection and community. How the nature of technology has changed the way we think about community but has not necessarily made it easier to maintain the connections needed to maintain resilient … [Read more...]
