A Winter of Theatre January February 2018 in Victoria BC.

A Winter of Theatre January February 2018 in Victoria BC. It's official! There is no longer any downtime in theatre in Victoria BC.  The holiday pantomimes produced by Kaleidoscope Theatre for Young People, St Luke's Players and Peninsula Players as well as Launch Pad Theatre's radio play and Atomic Vaudeville's NYE Cabaret are barely finished before Castlereigh Theatre Project and Bema Productions kick the year off in high style with two … [Read more...]

The Dream Collectors by Impulse Theatre April 19-22, 2017. A review.

The Dream Collector(s) by Impulse Theatre April 19-22, 2017. A review. Impulse Theatre has been enchanting and confounding me since 2012.  I remember watching Andrew Barrett and Mathilde Cobanli performing in Light on Our Feet (Holly Vivian’s sadly departed fundraiser featuring dance artists from around the region), thinking “I must meet these young people, they are doing ground-breaking work”.  Now in their seventh season, Impulse Theatre was … [Read more...]

A Summer of Theatre 2016 in Victoria BC.

A Summer of Theatre 2016 in Victoria BC. Ah—summer! The regular theatre season concludes and audiences can look forward to festivals and evenings outdoors.  Although the volume slows down somewhat, there are still plenty of wonderful seasonal surprises for your viewing pleasure. This list is current as of June 1 2016.  I will continue to update it as shows are announced. June 2016 Pizazz and All That Jazz at Jim Pattison Toyota a … [Read more...]

ana by Impulse Theatre at Uno Fest 2016. A review.

Ana by Impulse Theatre at Uno Fest 2016. A review. Emerging artist—these words are fraught with meaning and interpretation.  How long does one emerge?  When can a company consider itself to be established? With ana, currently at Intrepid Theatre’s Uno Fest May 26-28, 2016, Impulse Theatre confirms, once again, their place in the region’s burgeoning arts scene, and as “part of the current great cultural shift” (my comments following Wolf in … [Read more...]

Theatre Under the Gun March 13 2016. A preview.

Intrepid Theatre presents the third annual Theatre Under the Gun (TUG) Sunday March 13th at the Metro Studio (Victoria BC). TUG is deadline-driven, insomnia fuelled creation at its best as six teams made up of Victoria’s ace indie theatre-makers race against the clock to create brand new 10-minute performances in just 48 hours using only their quick wits, raw talent and a mysterious gift-wrapped box of inspiration. The clock starts on Friday … [Read more...]

Wolf in the Mirror by Impulse Theatre, June 19-22, 2014. A review. Take a journey in movement and music, through myth and magic in Wolf in the Mirror—the latest (and most ambitious) creation of Victoria’s Impulse Theatre (currently onstage June 19-22 at the Metro Studio). This bold young company, comprised of performers in their early 20s, has never been afraid to blur artistic boundaries in the many works they’ve produced since their … [Read more...]

When Impulse Theatre’s Wolf in the Mirror opens at the Metro Studio Theatre June 19-21 it will be the culmination of a three-year journey for Artistic Director Andrew Barrett and Artistic Associate Emily Piggford. Photo: Pamela Bethel Wolf in the Mirror was originally created as a short piece for the University of Victoria Theatre program’s SATCo (Student Alternative Theatre Company) where it was awarded the best SATCo of 2011. Victoria Fringe Festival 2013 – my “local” picks

When it comes to the Victoria Fringe, I’m a mere baby fringer. It wasn’t until the 20th anniversary in 2006 that I really got involved in this two week long festival of alternative live performance.  I love the buzz, and hanging out with fellow volunteers, performers and like-minded “fringe addicts”.  I see between 30 and 40 shows at the Victoria Fringe, and another 50 – 60 shows during the year.  Here are my “local” picks based on performances … [Read more...]

Theatre Recap for 2012

Following on Lois Watson's lead, (Lois is a stage manager based in Vancouver who I originally met online), here is my theatre recap for 2012.  I saw 105 productions (a far cry from Lois' 174): 67 during the regular season, and 38 at the Victoria Fringe Festival.  I've listed them in chronological order. There were 72 theatre related posts on this blog, including 28 reviews, 3 interviews, 5 seasonal posts and over 20 previews.  I'd like to … [Read more...]
