University of Victoria School of Music presents tribute to Mahler Jan 6 – 11 2014

A tribute to Mahler, presented by the University of Victoria School of Music, January 6 - 11, 2014, includes Song of the Earth (Das Lied von der Erde).  My knowledge of Mahler - sadly - is limited to the 1974 biographical film by Ken Russell, so when Kristy Farkas, the Concert Manager for the UVic School of Music, contacted me with news of a week-long Mahler tribute, I knew that I had to add some of the events to my arts calendar. I've also … [Read more...]

From the Heart: enter into the journey of reconciliation. July 10 – 27th 2013.

I grew up in Ucluelet on the traditional lands of the Nuu-chah-nulth people, but it wasn’t until I was in Grade 5 or 6 that the first aboriginal students joined us at the local elementary school. Our settler’s memory can be very selective, even … [Read more...]

Reasons To Be Pretty at UVic Phoenix Theatre – a review

The language is as blue as the collars of the four young working class protagonists in Neil La Bute’s Reasons To Be Pretty but it is not gratuitous. Filled with all the passions and dreams of these twenty-somethings on the cusp of adult-hood, this naturalistic, sprawling juggernaut of a tale moves rapidly from scene to scene, underscored by the throbbing music of  “the Boss” himself – Bruce Springsteen. Reasons To Be Pretty premiered in 2008, … [Read more...]

Cage 100 Festival in Victoria BC – a fine arts collaboration

I’m always looking to extend my cultural horizons beyond tried and true choices. The Cage Festival, November 8th – 22nd has definitely piqued my interest.   Four Victoria arts institutions - the Victoria Symphony, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, University of Victoria (School of Music) and Open Space - are celebrating the 100th anniversary of John Cage’s birth by hosting a series of concerts, art exhibitions and special retrospectives … [Read more...]

Peter N’ Chris – The Mystery of the Hungry Heart Motel. A review.

Local fans of Peter Carlone and Chris Wilson, better known as the comedy duo “Peter N’ Chris”, will be pleased to know they’ve returned to Victoria and are currently the Alumni Spotlight at the University of Victoria Phoenix Theatre with The Mystery of the Hungry Heart Motel. Graduates (in 2008) of UVic’s Theatre program, Carlone and Wilson were already regulars of Itsazoo Productions and Atomic Vaudeville when they mounted their eponymous … [Read more...]
