Idea Wave 2012

In 2010,  Kris Constable conceived Idea Wave - a two day conference of short 10 minute presentations by people who had an idea - big or small, on any subject.  Since then, there have been three Idea Wave conferences, the latest February 25 and 26th in Victoria BC.  I've had the pleasure of speaking at all three and would personally like to thank Kris for creating a space/place and community for people who share a passion for thinking, ideas, … [Read more...]

Impressions from “A Conversation on Amalgamation” February 7th, 2012 Victoria BC

I arrived at SJ Willis Educational Centre to a packed auditorium - 150 people determined to share in this "Conversation on Amalgamation" convened by a volunteer committee of: Shellie Gudgeon, Tamara Hernandez, Rod Phillips, Susan Jones and Mat Wright.  Since their involvement started largely due to conversations on Twitter, there was naturally a new media component to the evening. Here is the #yyjgov tweet stream as curated using … [Read more...]

Standards of Practice for Blogging

We often read about the unwritten rules of blogging.  Perhaps, instead of rules, we can consider  some standards of practice,  best practices or values. … [Read more...]

Fresh Year, Fresh Face

It's the first day of 2012, and I'm beginning it fresh-faced (without makeup) thanks to a conversation almost a year ago with Megan Ann Ward, a then-local Victoria slam poet. … [Read more...]

Why is YOUR business using social media?

In 2012, social media is ubiquitous.  Many consumers count on the recommendations of their friends for their purchasing decisions. I'm no different.  For this first day of the year, we were on a mission - a walk at Island View Beach, followed by nachos.  I did what I often do - sent out a request via Twitter.  This is the result. View the story "Why is YOUR business using social media?" on Storify] … [Read more...]

Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011 – Royal BC Museum

It's a measure of the Royal BC Museum's reputation that the North American premiere of the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is being held in Victoria this year.  I was honoured to be invited to a special preview in advance of the opening December 16.  The gallery has been transformed. Visually stunning, compiled from over 41,000 submissions, the 108 winning images compel your full attention. … [Read more...]

Word Camp Victoria 2012 Presentation: disclosures, attribution and copyright

I’m excited to be presenting, with Brenda Johima,  at WordCamp 2012 on the topic of: disclosures, attribution and copyright. In the ever evolving realm of social media and the internet, content is created and shared. Now that we’re blogging, how do we credit the original creator? Do we have the right to use the image or written copy? Does our audience really need to know if we are paid to write a post, or received free tickets … [Read more...]

Gourmet Gala in the Cowichan Valley – a Success!

If attendance at Gourmet Gala October 1st  is any indication, the Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce deserves to be extremely proud. It was a big leap of faith to go from previous galas, held in much smaller venues, to this year's event, held in the brand-new Mellor Hall at the Cowichan Exhibition grounds. When the organizers learned that I would be celebrating a birthday, they graciously extended an invitation … [Read more...]

Government Social Media Policy – Victoria (Australia)

Thanks to Kris Constable for the link to a YouTube video for staff of the Department of Justice - Victoria (Australia). The video outlines the organization's social media policy. [vsw id="8iQLkt5CG8I" source="youtube" width="425" height="344" autoplay="no"] Have you, as a member of the public, seen other government departments that have clearly laid out their social media policies?  Is it a good idea? I'm presenting a "The Path Towards … [Read more...]

Five Hole for Food – Help the Mustard Seed Food Bank

It's no secret that a good deal of my news concerning special events comes from social media via Twitter and Facebook. So, when Dixon Tam tweeted me about Five Hole For Food, I was only more than happy to help promote this fundraiser/foodraiser for the Mustard Seed Food Bank. I've known Dixon virtually for several years now; Five Hole For Food is his volunteer commitment. It will be an added bonus to meet him in person. What is Five Hole … [Read more...]
