Victoria audiences will be thrilled for the opportunity to experience Vertical Orchestra 2013: Transpondings, August 11th at 8pm at the Atrium, featuring compositions by Victoria-based experimental composers.
From August 9 to 11, Vancouver’s Redshift Music and Victoria’s Open Space Arts Society will present a series of free new music concerts in alternative, public venues in Vancouver, North Vancouver, and Victoria. Inspired by the transponder, an instrument that reads and transmits sound signals during SONAR communication to navigate, measure distance, and track positions, Transpondings brings together ten composers from these cities to create new pieces exploring communication methods that will be performed live and transmitted to surrounding ears. These composers are: North Vancouver’s Kristopher Fulton, and Jordan Nobles; Vancouver’s Martin Ritter, Alyssa Aska, and Stefan Hintersteininger; and Victoria’s Daniel Brandes, Stefan Maier, Kristy Farkas, Lynne Penhale, and Kimberley Shepherd. Performing these new compositions will be the Vertical Orchestra, Redshift’s flagship ensemble for spatialized music made up of musicians from these communities.
Each concert will be performed in a public venue and make use of the architectural and acoustic uniqueness of each space. All concerts will feature new compositions written specifically for these distinct, multi-level structures—The Atrium in downtown Victoria, The Blusson Spinal Cord Centre in Vancouver, and Lonsdale Quay Market in North Vancouver.
Vertical Orchestra 2013: Transpondings presents new music in unexpected public spaces. These concerts will demonstrate the diversity of British Columbia’s musical expression and how Vancouver and Victoria’s new music communities co-mingle and interact. Given the producers’ expertise in presenting unique and memorable musical events, the artistry of the composer and performer community involved in the show, and the inspiring sonic and visual potential of the concert venues themselves, audiences can expect a rare and once-in-a-lifetime experience.
