Subha Gill’s $5000 Fundraiser

UPDATE April 12, 2012

I received an update email from Michelle Beland, the organizer.  The fundraiser at Island Centre of Excellence (ICE) raised over $10,000 for Subha and her family.  Thanks to the community for coming out to support a family during a very difficult time.

In a moment, life changes. And as a parent, all your energy is focused into one goal – that of helping your child get better, get well.  You can’t always do it alone.  Such is the case for the family of Subha Gill.

Subha was a UVic student until she was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer, in August, 2011. In January 2012, after undergoing months of chemotherapy, Subha received devastating news that her cancer had not only resisted the chemo, but had spread further.

While her parents search for alternative forms of treatment, another UVic student, Michelle Beland, approached Geoff Carrow (her boss) at the Island Centre of Excellence hockey training facility in Colwood. Together they are organizing a fundraiser to help offset the costs of medicine and travel expenses.

Subha Gill’s $5000 Fundraiser takes place Friday/Saturday April 6-7. The events included are a 24hr skating treadmill marathon, a mini 3on3 hockey tournament, a silent auction, dinner Friday night and breakfast Saturday morning.

If you’d like to enter a team, skate, raise pledges, donate to the silent auction, or assist in any way, please contact Michelle.
