Five Hole for Food – Help the Mustard Seed Food Bank

It’s no secret that a good deal of my news concerning special events comes from social media via Twitter and Facebook.

So, when Dixon Tam tweeted me about Five Hole For Food, I was only more than happy to help promote this fundraiser/foodraiser for the Mustard Seed Food Bank. I’ve known Dixon virtually for several years now; Five Hole For Food is his volunteer commitment. It will be an added bonus to meet him in person.

What is Five Hole For Food?

Five Hole for Food is an annual coast to coast tour playing hockey to support food banks across Canada.

We set up a rink in the heart of each city and invite anyone and everyone to come out to play hockey to fight hunger. Bring your stick, bring a can of food, and have fun. 100% of the proceeds go to the local food bank in each city.

Why does the Mustard Seed Food Bank need this help?  Consider your own family’s situation. Does it seem like the refrigerator door is always open in the summer ? I know when my two sons were growing up, this seemed to be the case, particularly with the increased activity that the season brings.

In addition, there are added expenses in the summer, once school is out – perhaps additional child or day care, summer programs, a summer wardrobe.  Have you had to juggle your household budget to accommodate those extra expenses? Did you ever take money from your food budget to do so?

The reality is – food bank donations decrease in the summer.  It’s why you’ll see events like Stuff the Bus and Five Hole For Food.

If you like to play road hockey come out and support Five Hole For Food, Friday July 8th noon to 6pm at Saanich Plaza. Say “hi” to Dixon and tell him – I sent you!

Don’t worry if you can’t attend; all major grocery stores accept donations at the tills. Some even have special grab bags to purchase for a child going to summer camp.  The Mustard Seed accepts online donations too.

I remember when the first Canadian food bank opened in Edmonton, followed shortly thereafter by the Mustard Seed in Victoria. An entire generation of Canadians has grown up with their assistance. Like everyone else, I dream of a future where food banks are not needed. In the meantime, I’ll support them as I can! Please give generously.
