Happening (winter) & Homo for the Holidays December 4, 2015.

Happening (winter)/Homo for the Holidays Cabaret December 4, 2015.  Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in partnership with Intrepid Theatre.

December is typically chock-a-block full of arts events from music to theatre, musicals to art openings. Two years ago, in 2014, Intrepid Theatre introduced another contender into the mix with Homo for the Holidays, a cheeky cabaret celebrating gay culture and queer artists. From its debut, Homo for the Holidays was a sold-out success and tickets a hot commodity.

For 2015, Intrepid partners with the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria to create an even “bigger, sparklier, artier” night of site-specific performance, installations and cabaret-style entertainment throughout the historic Spencer Mansion and AGGV galleries.

Come to mix, mingle and get in the spirit—whether naughty or nice, there’s a place for everyone.

Winter Happening Homo for the Holidays December 2015

Happening (winter)/Homo for the Holidays takes place Friday December 4th from 8pm-11pm and tickets are on-sale now at either the AGGV or Intrepid Theatre.

Artists include many well-loved acts–drag queen Gouda Gabor, musician Hank Pine performing a 30 minute sound installation, designer Jimbo Insell (Rocky Horror Show, Ride the Cyclone) with a forced perspective transformation, and Mileena (Miss Gay Vancouver Island 2015). Kelly Hudson (Rocky Horror Show, Ride the Cyclone) hosts and DJ Britt Small promises to keep everyone dancing.

Sean Guist, Intrepid Theatre’s Marketing and Development Co-ordinator, explains the collaboration came about when the AGGV, after the wild success of its signature Urbanite, created a new event series, happening. The first iteration saw the gallery partner with Pacific Opera Victoria to welcome spring with an evening of song, cocktails and art.

Both organizations are looking to bridge audiences and amplify existing events—this partnership made perfect sense given the successes of their individual endeavours.

Look for roving installations in the Anna Banana exhibition, in what Guist describes as “mail art meets Taylor Mac”.

Dress up in your finest attire and come prepared to get into the spirit of fun and frivolity that is sure to pervade and permeate a treasured Victoria institution. Who said the arts had to be stuffy?

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and Intrepid Theatre are collaborating to bring you Homo for the Holidays in its third edition to Gallery as “happening (winter) | Homo for the Holidays”. This event will take over the Gallery with performances taking place in site-specific exhibitions and on “cabaret stages” in The Spencer Mansion on Friday, December 4th. This event will feature interdisciplinary, queer-themed, site-specific and cabaret style performances complete with a dance party, inspired refreshments and art.
