Carey Newman receives ProArt Alliance 2018 Regional Arts Award (media release)

The Professional Arts Alliance of Greater Victoria (ProArt) announces Carey Newman the winner of the 2018 Regional Arts Award, sponsored by PARC Retirement Living.

At the awards reception on May 3, 2018, held at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, a representative of PARC Retirement Living presented the inaugural PARC Retirement Living Mid-Career Artist Award to artist Carey Newman.

Nominated by Pacific Opera Victoria, Newman was the jury’s unanimous choice from a good representation of the outstanding excellence of multi-disciplinary arts practitioners in the Capital Region. The jury was impressed with Newman’s commitment to his work and the significant contribution that he makes to the regional arts community. As stated in Newman’s nomination letter:

“The qualities of sensitivity and integrity characterize Carey Newman’s artistic practice. Of British, Kwagiulth and Salish descent, Carey draws upon varied cultures for his inspiration. His artworks are contemporary innovations that adhere to traditional values. Informed by his training in classical voice and piano, and a background in carving and cultural artistic practice, his works are created in music, opera, acoustics, wood, stone, precious metals, glass, painting, bronze and steel. Through all these mediums, Carey has developed an artistic vocabulary that is rooted in traditional form, driven by a contemporary aesthetic and expressed through a personal narrative.”
