Gigantic Lying Mouth by Kevin Gilday. Victoria Fringe 2017. An interview.
All the way from Glasgow Scotland, “spoken word sensation” Kevin Gilday’s Gigantic Lying Mouth is like “a variety show in one. It contains spoken word, theatre, multimedia and comedy, and mixes it all through a postmodern blender until you’re left with something entirely unique. It’s the very definition of what a fringe show should be.”
NB: Gigantic Lying Mouth comes to Victoria after the Edmonton Fringe and is not here during the first weekend. FIVE performances only starting Monday August 28th.
How long have you been producing work on the Fringe circuit? As an artist/company?
I’ve been creating and performing shows at fringe festivals since my first run at Edinburgh in 2013. You might think it sounds easy for an artist from Glasgow to get a run at the Edinburgh fringe, but there’s a great rivalry between the cities – I get a harder time from the locals than any international act! Despite this, I returned to Edinburgh again in 2014 and 2015. That same year I also discovered the excitement of the Canadian Fringe circuit with a trip to perform in Toronto. It was a landmark moment for me – all the fun of the Edinburgh Fringe without the saturation that is slowly strangling that festival. I knew then that I wanted to take my work around Canada and experience the other great fringe festivals, such as Victoria.
Is this your first visit to Victoria?
It is indeed. I’m very much looking forward to exploring the city.
Have you been (or will you be) taking the show to other Fringes?
Yes. I’ll be in Edmonton directly before and Vancouver directly afterwards.
Is your show a new work, or has it been performed elsewhere?
Frighteningly, it’s a new work. I’ve performed a work in progress version and a preview in Glasgow, but these fringe performances will be its first proper foray into the world.
Significant awards or accolades? (not just on the Fringe circuit)
I’m a multiple poetry slam winner in the UK as well as twice being shortlisted for Scotland’s Short Play of the Year Award.
Can you speak to the creation process of this work?
It came from chaos! The core concept of the show had been niggling on the outskirts of my brain for some time – a show that combined all the elements of my practice into one. But in reality there were so many disparate elements coming together that the show would have been 3 hours long. The process for me was as much about refining the material as it was creating it.
Who will your show appeal to?
Spoken word enthusiasts, experimental theatre fans, devotees of the weird Scottish sense of humour.
What would you say to entice a potential audience member to come?
Gigantic Lying Mouth is like a variety show in one. It contains spoken word, theatre, multimedia and comedy, and mixes it all through a postmodern blender until you’re left with something entirely unique. It’s the very definition of what a fringe show should be.
What do you hope to inspire in your audience?
I hope they go away entertained, energised and questioning. Good theatre always creates more questions than it answers.

Scottish spoken word sensation comes to VictoriaCreative Scotland supported show Gigantic Lying Mouth to debut at the fringe festival
Glasgow, Scotland: Award winning writer and performer Kevin P. Gilday is bringing his new show Gigantic Lying Mouth to the Victoria fringe with support from the Scottish government.
Kevin’s tour of Canada and the US has been supported by Creative Scotland, the country’s arts council, in order to promote Scottish art and identity abroad.
Kevin P. Gilday is a writer, theatre-maker and one of the UK’s foremost spoken word artists. He has performed all over the world including the BBC 6 Music Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, Toronto Fringe, Wickerman, Belladrum, Lingo (Dublin) and Glastonbury Festivals (on two occasions). He has supported artists such as Saul Williams, Sage Francis and George the Poet. His writing has appeared in publications and websites around the world while his controversial series of videos created for the BBC have been viewed by over a quarter of a million people.
A reflexive solo performance combining contemporary spoken word with monologues, multimedia and comedy – Gigantic Lying Mouth follows the story of the eponymous author. After perishing in a tragic yoga accident, Kevin finds himself trapped in the afterlife and in line for a celestial judgement – only to find things are a little different on the other side. Guided through the afterlife by a Machiavellian guardian angel, the mischievous Lady Lazarus, Kevin must analyse the decisions and lies that characterised his existence if he ever hopes of justifying his life on earth.
