Victoria Fringe Festival 2011 – my “away” picks

Disclaimers first: I am not a reviewer, but I do see a lot of theatre –33 shows at last year’s Victoria Fringe Festival. During the year I volunteer regularly with Atomic Vaudeville, Intrepid Theatre, The Canadian College of Performing Arts and Theatre SKAM. I attend the Belfry, Theatre Inconnu, Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre and the Phoenix Theatre at Uvic too. I have either seen these performers in previous shows, or been intrigued by … [Read more...]

Victoria Fringe Festival 2011 – my “local” picks

I love the Victoria Fringe Festival! When my kids were growing up, I only attended the odd show here and there, but that all changed in 2006 when my second son moved away to take a job as a historical interpreter at the MacLean Mill in Port Alberni. Without two teenage boys to feed and house, there was suddenly disposable income. 2006 was the 20th anniversary of the Victoria Fringe, and I managed to see more shows that year than in all the … [Read more...]

Government Social Media Policy – Victoria (Australia)

Social Media Camp Victoria 2011 #smcv11

It's a week later and I'm still processing Social Media Camp 2011, #SMCV11, held at the Victoria Conference Centre on June 3rd and 4th. Exhilarating, sharing, connecting, community, fun, generosity, gratitude - these are a few of the words that come to mind when trying to explain my experiences for outsiders. When we live in the "social media bubble" we forget, at times, that there are people who do not know what a blog is, let alone social … [Read more...]

Empire Avenue – a beginning

{EAV_BLOG_VER:59a4d5dbb3352ed3} Empire Avenue is an Edmonton based company that uses social gaming to measure your influence across the social web.  You can connect your existing accounts on Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Facebook (profile and page) and even your blog (the latter needing to be verified). Some people choose to use Empire Avenue passively, much like Klout, PeerIndex or even Twitalyzer, but there is an aspect of Empire Avenue that … [Read more...]

The Arrival of the Queen (bee) at the Fairmont Empress

What a treat to be present for the arrival of the Queen (bee) at the Fairmont Empress! Recently named Executive Chef Kamal Silva was instrumental in introducing honeybees to  the Fairmont Vancouver Airport hotel, and decided to repeat the experience in his new home, Victoria BC. John Gibeau of the Honeybee Centre in Surrey provided over 400,000 Carniolan bees, in 10 hives, which have been installed in the Sunken Garden at the Empress. Over … [Read more...]
