Theatre for the holidays in Victoria BC, December 2012

There's nothing quite like the theatre to whisk you away, and what better way to celebrate the holiday season than with tickets to an awesome show and time with family and friends. The theatrical offerings this year from December 21st to year end are varied, ranging from the traditional (A Christmas Carol and St Luke's Christmas pantomine), to variety/vaudeville (Derwin Blanshard and Atomic Vaudeville) , dance (Pandora's Box), and even more … [Read more...]

“A Place To Listen” concert December 19, 2012

I love how life works.  One of my goals has been to expand my cultural horizons, and push the boundaries of what I would normally watch, attend or listen to.  In November, during the Cage 100 celebrations and series, I had the opportunity to meet a number of young composers, among them Chrisopher Reiche of Open Space, and Daniel Brandes, founder of the "A Place To Listen" concert series. Just as in later work by Cage, Brandes is interested in … [Read more...]

Kafka the Musical by Murray Gold at Theatre Inconnu. A review.

Kafka the Musical is a mad-cap, whirlwind, absurdist descent, into the delirious mind of one of the early 20th century’s most influential writers and thinkers, Franz Kafka. It was originally written in 2011 as a BBC radio play by Murray Gold, playwright, and compose for the BBC's Dr. Who series. David Tennant, as Kafka, was named Best Actor at the inaugural BBC Audio Drama Awards in January 2012. Composer Murray Gold By unique and happy … [Read more...]

Lady Windemere’s Fan at Langham Court Theatre. A review.

The volunteers at Langham Court Theatre have devoted countless hours preparing Lady Windemere’s Fan for the stage, and it shows in all aspects of the current production.  Sets are beautiful, costumes exquisite and the acting a strong example of excellent ensemble work, with shining moments of drama, wit and comedy. The legendary Oscar Wilde, essayist and social critic, wrote Lady Windemere’s Fan in 1892; it was staged for the first time … [Read more...]

Ghosts of the Plaza – a review

I’m not sure the exact amount of the City of  Victoria 150 grant received to help produce Ghosts of the Plaza (currently playing at the Oddfellows Lodge until November 24th) but, to my mind, it is money very well spent. This engaging interactive theatre production takes us behind the scenes of a once-much-loved local landmark (The Victoria Plaza Hotel) to tell the tales of local characters we don’t normally hear much about. Ghosts of the Plaza … [Read more...]

Giggling Iguana presents: 1.9.8.4. by David Elendune. A review

1.9.8.4. by Giggling Iguana, currently playing at Intrepid Theatre Club until December 2nd, is harrowing, terrifying, risk-taking theatre that is definitely not for the faint of heart. Lovers of psychological thrillers and horror flicks will surely appreciate the significant work done by this ensemble, under the careful guidance of seasoned director Roger Carr. Actors walk a constant tight rope – not only in their stage personas, but with the … [Read more...]

I haven’t had the chance to attend yet, but the promise of discounted tickets for arriving in “fancy dress” and the prospect of watching some of the most talented performers I know, ensures that I simply MUST be at Episode 3 of “Derwin Blanshard’s Extremely Classy Sunday Evening Programme” this coming Sunday November 25th. 1.9.8.4. by David Elendune. Giggling Iguana Productions Nov 21-Dec 2nd 2012

1984 has come and gone.  Yet memories of the iconic dystopian novel, written by George Orwell, and originally published in 1949, remain. Orwellian has become an adjective, and words coined in the book  Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak  have entered our every day language. Now, author David Elendune, and Giggling Iguana Productions present us with a 1.9.8.4 for the future, an expansion and re-imagining of the original … [Read more...]

A Christmas Carol at the Belfry Theatre – a review

When Michael Shamata arrived as Artistic Director at the Belfry Theatre in December 2007, he brought with him the remembrance of a much-loved Toronto holiday tradition. Since 2001 he had directed his adaptation of Charles Dickens iconic and standard bearing story, A Christmas Carol, for the Soulpepper Theatre Company, and couldn’t wait to see it staged in Victoria. Now, after 5 years, the wait is over, and avid theatre-goers and lovers of … [Read more...]
