Social Media Camp Victoria 2011 #smcv11

It's a week later and I'm still processing Social Media Camp 2011, #SMCV11, held at the Victoria Conference Centre on June 3rd and 4th. Exhilarating, sharing, connecting, community, fun, generosity, gratitude - these are a few of the words that come to mind when trying to explain my experiences for outsiders. When we live in the "social media bubble" we forget, at times, that there are people who do not know what a blog is, let alone social … [Read more...]

Empire Avenue – a beginning

{EAV_BLOG_VER:59a4d5dbb3352ed3} Empire Avenue is an Edmonton based company that uses social gaming to measure your influence across the social web.  You can connect your existing accounts on Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Facebook (profile and page) and even your blog (the latter needing to be verified). Some people choose to use Empire Avenue passively, much like Klout, PeerIndex or even Twitalyzer, but there is an aspect of Empire Avenue that … [Read more...]

The Arrival of the Queen (bee) at the Fairmont Empress

What a treat to be present for the arrival of the Queen (bee) at the Fairmont Empress! Recently named Executive Chef Kamal Silva was instrumental in introducing honeybees to  the Fairmont Vancouver Airport hotel, and decided to repeat the experience in his new home, Victoria BC. John Gibeau of the Honeybee Centre in Surrey provided over 400,000 Carniolan bees, in 10 hives, which have been installed in the Sunken Garden at the Empress. Over … [Read more...]

Most Inspiring User – West Coast Social Media Awards

I've been nominated for a #Westie (the inaugural West Coast Social Media awards) in the Most Inspiring User category. It's an honour, most definitely.  Voting has commenced and will end May 23rd.  The top 7 in each category will then be forwarded to a panel of judges who will make the final decision. I struggle with this. Like many I'm not good at "tooting my own horn" and asking for the votes. But, this year especially, there is another … [Read more...]

Social Media and Friendship

From Flickr: Photo of Raul Pacheco (aka Hummingbird604) and Janis La Couvée at WordCampVictoria May 2010 Whenever people ask me about the return on investment (ROI) of social media, particularly as it pertains to me personally, I'm left at a loss for words. I've had individuals say "I'm not looking to expand my social circles, so social media is a waste of time for me". Fair enough! That was not my case. Widowed in 2001, with children … [Read more...]

Chelsea Tucker “M” Award Winner – Favourite Performer 2011

Powerhouse Performance Co. Presents: EDGES in Edmonton

I had the opportunity of attending the opening production by Powerhouse Performance Co. in Victoria earlier this year. One of the co-founders, Sarah Horsman, is now in Edmonton. Join Powerhouse Performance Company for a short run of the hit musical EDGES: A Song Cycle by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. EDGES was written in 2005 while Pasek and Paul were undergraduate students in musical theatre at the University of Michigan. This song … [Read more...]

MISA BC April 28 -29 Nanaimo BC

I've made some amazing connections since signing up for Twitter on April 8 2009. These connections happen with incredible synchronicity, and leap-frogging.  Thus it was for Jason Birch and I. Jason works in IT for the City of Nanaimo, his spouse is francophone - this was actually our first "linkage". We share a passion for community, and for "open".  Jason invited me to speak to the spring MISA BC (Municipal Information Systems Association of … [Read more...]

Kindred Spirits: Elektra Women’s Choir & Shelagh Rogers

I'm happy to promote a rare Victoria concert by Vancouver's Elektra Women's Choir,  "Kindred Spirits", Saturday May 14th at Christ Church Cathedral. Kindred Spirits brings together Shelagh Rogers, an icon of Canadian broadcasting, and Vancouver’s renowned Elektra Women’s Choir (Morna Edmundson, Artistic Director) in an exploration of friendship, love, and what it means to be Canadian. Incorporating Shelagh’s personal reminiscences, … [Read more...]
