Cuts to Camosun College’s Applied Communication Program: An Open Letter from Grad Amanda Farrell-Low

When Camosun College announced recent program cuts, one casualty was the Applied Communication Program, which has, since 1972, trained thousands of communications and communications industry professionals. Graduates of the program work in every communications and media field, and are present in every major media outlet in Victoria BC (and well beyond). One such graduate is Amanda Farrell- Low (class 32). Here is her open letter concerning the … [Read more...]

Victoria Shakespeare 2012 – Live Outdoor Summer Theatre

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of volunteering for the Victoria Shakespeare Society during their summer season. It was so much fun, I've become a regular.  Although the society has been a vital part of summer arts programming in the capital region since 2003 (in this incarnation), it wasn't until the summer of 2009, when a friend of my son’s was in Julius Caesar, that we wandered up the hill to the grounds of Camosun College. You can read … [Read more...]

Subha Gill’s $5000 Fundraiser

UPDATE April 12, 2012 I received an update email from Michelle Beland, the organizer.  The fundraiser at Island Centre of Excellence (ICE) raised over $10,000 for Subha and her family.  Thanks to the community for coming out to support a family during a very difficult time.   In a moment, life changes. And as a parent, all your energy is focused into one goal – that of helping your child get better, get well.  You can’t always do it … [Read more...]

“In Transit” by VIRCS Enable Youth Theatre Program, April 14 2012

Have you ever lived in another country, or had the experience of being "the other"?  I have - for six years in my twenties, I lived in France.  The sense of trying so hard to belong, while never truly fitting in remains strongly planted in my memory. Canada is a multi-cultural country, but it is still a challenge for newcomers to integrate.  How do young people and teenagers cope?  The Victoria Refugee and Immigrant Centre Society (VIRCS) has … [Read more...]

Rabbit Hole, Langham Court Theatre – a review

Langham Court Theatre sets the bar very high with their current production, Rabbit Hole, the Pulitzer-prize drama by David Lindsay-Abaire. From the moment I entered the theatre, to the moment I left, I was drawn into a world few of us would intentionally inhabit, even if many of us, unfortunately, do. Long before film, there was theatre. Long before reality TV, there was theatre. Long before the Belfry Theatre, Theatre Inconnu, Intrepid … [Read more...]

Congratulations on Your Move Cabin 12!

Congratulations to the team at Cabin 12 Restaurant on a successful move from the downtown core to a new location at 3111 Cedar Hill Rd (home to the former La Collina, Fresh Bistro/Bakery, and Sliders). The history of Cabin 12  @Cabin12Victoria and the morning Victoriatweetup and social media "scene" in Victoria are closely inter-twined. Corey Judd started his popular downtown Victoria eatery in early 2009, leveraging Facebook for venture … [Read more...]

The Human Body Project Celebrates 6th Anniversary with a March Vigil

The first year  Tasha Diamant appeared in the Human Body Project at the Victoria Fringe Festival, I had just completed the photo shoot for the Babes (and Blokes) Go Bare for Cancer fundraising calendar, so the idea of a middle-aged woman onstage, naked and unscripted, struck me, not as odd, but as intriguing. The Human Body Project is an ongoing performance art and non-violent action project. As creator, I make an intention to show up in … [Read more...]

Building Resilient Networks, Online and Off, talk from IdeaWave 2011

From a talk given at Idea Wave 2011: Building Resilient Networks, Online and Off, in the 21st Century.  Thanks to Kris Constable for continuing to provide a platform for critical thinkers to exchange ideas. Today I got to thinking about social media, connection and community. How the nature of technology has changed the way we think about community but has not necessarily made it easier to maintain the connections needed to maintain resilient … [Read more...]

Beyond the Blue Box – take recycling to the next level

In Victoria soft plastic recycling made it's debut in the early 1990s when a young entrepreneur saw a need and decided to fill it.  For years I paid him to come and pick up my plastic every few months. Syntal Products opened a plant in the Keating Industrial Park area in 1995 and began to produce plastic lumber. People can recycle plastics there directly. In 2000 Pacific Mobile Depots set up their business, working in conjunction with local … [Read more...]
