You’re probably not expecting to drown today!

In the summer of 2010 Preventable, the community against preventable injuries, ran a contest about water safety, titled “You’re Probably Not Expecting to Drown Today”. Here is my original blog post in response. photo credit: Scarleth White on Flickr A child of the wet and wild west coast of Vancouver Island, I am well acquainted with death by drowing. Every year I knew people who died in boat accidents, or at the beach or lake. Sad but … [Read more...]

A Summer of Theatre in Victoria BC

There is an incredible amount of theatre in the summer in Victoria BC. So much so, it will require masterful planning and attention to detail to avoid missing shows. I LOVE Esquimalt – Buccaneer Days and more!

I LOVE Esquimalt! Where else can can adults dress up as pirates for the annual Buccaneer Days, and parade around yelling "Arrr matey"! Our family lived in Esquimalt for over 20 years. It was a wonderful place to raise children, with easy access to schools, the recreation centre, library, shopping, parks and beaches. A highlight of our year was always the annual Buccaneer Days - from the early morning "wakey wakey" call shouted through … [Read more...]

Most Inspiring User – West Coast Social Media Awards

I've been nominated for a #Westie (the inaugural West Coast Social Media awards) in the Most Inspiring User category. It's an honour, most definitely.  Voting has commenced and will end May 23rd.  The top 7 in each category will then be forwarded to a panel of judges who will make the final decision. I struggle with this. Like many I'm not good at "tooting my own horn" and asking for the votes. But, this year especially, there is another … [Read more...]

Social Media and Friendship

From Flickr: Photo of Raul Pacheco (aka Hummingbird604) and Janis La Couvée at WordCampVictoria May 2010 Whenever people ask me about the return on investment (ROI) of social media, particularly as it pertains to me personally, I'm left at a loss for words. I've had individuals say "I'm not looking to expand my social circles, so social media is a waste of time for me". Fair enough! That was not my case. Widowed in 2001, with children … [Read more...]

I've made some amazing connections since signing up for Twitter on April 8 2009. These connections happen with incredible synchronicity, and leap-frogging.  Thus it was for Jason Birch and I. Jason works in IT for the City of Nanaimo, his spouse is francophone - this was actually our first "linkage". We share a passion for community, and for "open".  Jason invited me to speak to the spring MISA BC (Municipal Information Systems Association of … [Read more...]

Quadra Village Day 2011

Who doesn't love a free, family-friendly, all-ages celebration? Especially when food is involved. You'll find all that and more at the 9th annual Quadra Village Day, Saturday May 7th from 9:30 am to 1pm. I've been actively involved on the planning committee since shortly after moving to the Hillside-Quadra neighbourhood in 2006.  It's wonderful to see people pulling together - businesses, not-for-profits, citizens (young and old), community … [Read more...]

“Past Stewards of the Land” Mary Lake Jan 23 2011

It was an honour to be invited to an historic ceremony at Mary Lake, Sunday January 23rd, honouring "Past Stewards of the Land". It was the first time that hereditary chiefs from the five local tribes came together for an event that was not political. Respected Tsartlip elder Tom Sampson spoke. The Yellow Wolf Drummers and Singers offered 3 songs: a prayer, a song to honour the past stewards of the land, and a song to honour elders and … [Read more...]
